Delta Airlines reported the Airbus A350 went through "momentary turbulence" as it landed at its destination.

Multiple passengers and crew were hurt following a Delta Airlines aircraft from LA to Sydney, Australia encountered rough air Friday morning.

Flight DL41 "encountered brief turbulence" as it landed at Sydney Airport, a company official told. Several cabin crew members sustained injuries.

Local paramedics said they treated five patients, and transported a trio to a medical facility with minor injuries that included pain in the back and migraines. The injured were between their 30s to 70s.

The event represents the newest example of commercial jets experiencing turbulence, with experts saying that shifting climate patterns is a key driver.

There were 245 passengers and 15 crew members on the wide-body jet, the representative noted, stating that the plane landed "safely" at Sydney Airport at 06:48 local time on Friday morning.

Emergency responders said they received a call just only 180 seconds ahead of the plane touched down, and response teams were standing by on the runway.

Last year, 25 people were injured when a separate Delta aircraft, flying from Salt Lake City, Utah to Amsterdam, encountered "severe" rough air just two hours into the long-haul flight, and diverted for an unscheduled landing.

In-flight turbulence is a common occurrence during flights, and while instances of significant turbulence seem to be rising, they are statistically infrequent.

Estimates show that there are an estimated 5,000 incidents of severe or worse turbulence annually, out of a sum of more than 35 million journeys that are conducted worldwide.

Intense turbulence is categorized as when the up and down movements of a plane experiencing unstable air exert more than 1.5 times the force of gravity on your body - sufficient force to lift you out of your seat if you were not fastened by a safety belt.

As a changing climate modifies atmospheric conditions, experts warn that commercial aviation could become bumpier: shifts in temperature and shifting wind patterns in the jet stream level are likely to boost the occurrence and strength of dangerous in-flight bumps.
