A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the speed and management of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The accident took place on the Interoceanic Train, a line developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify what caused this tragedy,” affirmed the head of state.
The president announced that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The official noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the previous administration, whose presidency ended the previous year. This rail line was a hallmark of his leadership's developmental agenda for the southern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a historically less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The building of both rail lines was overseen by the armed forces, marking a dramatic expansion of its duties in civilian works. They were completed at an rapid pace, defying predictions to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously raised significant questions over construction quality.

In response, the president maintained that the train had been operating in total compliance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and management of these national projects.
